The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh, on behalf of the Ministry of Education (MoE) implemented the Bangladesh Research and Education Network (BdREN) in 2009. This Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) was financed jointly by the Bangladesh Government and the World Bank. In 2011 the UGC signed an IRU contract with Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) Ltd to allow the use of 2 fibre cores from its country-wide distributed OPGW network to provide the national backbone for BdREN.
BdREN operates as a Non-profit Trust organization with a board of trustees consisting of representatives from the universities/user communities, UGC, MoE and other members co-opted for their expertise and position in relevant industries.
BdREN now provides multi-gigabit capability to connect all universities, research institutions, medical colleges, libraries, laboratories, healthcare and agricultural institutions across the country and to support geographically dispersed academics, medical professionals, scientists and researchers with reliable access to high-end computing, simulation tools and datasets.
BdREN also connects to regional and trans-continental Research and Education Networks (RENs) (e.g. TEIN, GEANT and Internet2) providing opportunities for faculties and students of Bangladesh to access global academic communities and learning resources. It also facilitates international collaborative research and catalyzes innovation in the country.
