The 59th Meeting of the Asia Pacific Advanced Network (APAN59), organized by APAN and hosted by CINJI, took place from March 3 to 7, 2025, in Yokohama, Japan. As part of the meeting, our project workshop titled “Update and Discussion on the BGPWatch Platform” was successfully held on March 3.
The session aimed to provide a comprehensive update on the BGPWatch project, facilitate technical and strategic dialogue among project partners, and strengthen collaborative development of the platform.
Professor Changqing An delivered a presentation on the latest progress of the BGPWatch platform. Designed to improve network situational awareness and operational responsiveness, the platform includes features such as automated incident alerts, event severity assessment, historical event replay, and enhanced tools for BGP monitoring and management.
The workshop featured valuable insights and partner feedback from representatives of several regional NRENs:
- Chalermpol Charnsripinyo, Senior Research Specialist, NECTEC and ThaiREN
- Used the platform and demonstrated some features, such as hijacking events, peering information, routing information.
- Provided some suggestions regarding routing graph zoom – in, showing the AS geographical position, and displaying the network performance of links.
- Ariful Islam, Manager (Data and Transmission), BdREN
- Shared some features that help them deal with operational challenges, such as observing changes in peering information, monitoring how many prefixes have flapped, and accessing bogon prefix information and SAV filter information.
- Yahya Khan, Network Engineer, PERN
- Provided perspectives on how BGPWATCH is helpful in determining whether the traffic is traversing R&D paths or going via the commodity Internet.
- They have used the BGPWATCH API to do some development and hope that BGPWATCH can provide more APIs.
The session was attended by over 30 participants, including representatives from regional NRENs and partner institutions. In addition to the presentations, the session incorporated a project review meeting, offering a platform for attendees to assess the current implementation status, exchange insights, and deliberate on future development priorities. The constructive feedback collected during the discussion will inform the next phase of technical refinement and support broader regional deployment of the BGPWatch platform.
